Triston Casas: Breaking News

Shifts to 60-day IL

The Red Sox transferred Casas (abdomen/knee) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday. Casas' move to the 60-day IL frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for left-hander Eduardo Rivera, who was called up from Triple-A Worcester. The Red Sox placed Casas on the 10-day IL coming out of spring training while he was completing his recovery from knee surgery, and though his rehab from that injury has gone according to plan, the first baseman has since been shut down from activity after suffering a left abdominal strain earlier this month. Casas is without a clear timeline for a return, but Wednesday's transaction ensures that he'll be on the shelf through at least the final week of May.

Battling abdominal strain

Casas (knee) was diagnosed with an abdominal strain Tuesday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports. Casas began the regular season on the injured list to finish up his recovery from patellar tendon surgery but began to have problems with his left side after he resumed a swinging progression. Now that he's been confirmed to be dealing with an abdominal strain, the 26-year-old will be shut down from all activity until he begins to feel better. The Red Sox will then begin to build him up in a similar fashion to spring training, at which point a clearer timeline for his return to play could emerge.

Latest injury likely oblique issue

Casas (knee) will be "out a while" with what is now being described as a likely oblique issue, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Casas opened the season the 10-day injured list while continuing to rehab from left knee surgery. He had been swinging a bat but was shut down in early April with what was initially deemed a left intercostal strain. Casas tried to resume swinging less than a week later, but that didn't go well, and he was consequently sent in for an MRI. While Boston is still waiting for the results of that imaging, manager Alex Cora said Saturday that the organization is now treating the issue "like an oblique, rib injury." Cora added, "He's going to be out for a while but we're still waiting for the news from the doctor."
