Spencer Rattler: Breaking News

Unavailable Week 18

Rattler (finger) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Falcons, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports. Rattler continues to deal with a thumb injury to his throwing hand and will be in street clothes for the Saints' regular-season finale. Rattler started the first eight games of the season, completing 68 percent of his passes for 1,586 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions. However, he was benched in favor of Tyler Shough, who has outperformed expectations thus far, leaving Rattler's future with New Orleans uncertain.

Questionable for Sunday

Rattler (finger) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's game against the Falcons, Jeff Nowak of WWL Radio reports. Rattler has been fulfilling his role as the Saints' backup quarterback since rookie Tyler Shough was named the starter for Week 9 and beyond. The backup has not practiced since Week 16 due to a thumb injury on his throwing hand, which has left the Saints with just Taysom Hill healthy as a depth option as they end the season. Rattler's inability to practice with the injury for consecutive weeks means Hill could potentially play a role at quarterback in Sunday's contest if Shough were to need to leave the game for any reason.

Ceding starting role to Shough

Saints head coach Kellen Moore informed Rattler that he will move into the No. 2 role at quarterback with Tyler Shough set to take over as the team's starting quarterback beginning with Sunday's game against the Rams, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. After a 1-7 start to the season, the Saints are opting for a change under center after Rattler beat out Shough, a rookie second-round pick out of Louisville, for the starting job coming out of the preseason. Despite a lackluster supporting cast, Rattler was reasonably efficient as a passer over his eight starts (68 percent completion rate, 6.2 yards per attempt), but he had been mistake-prone over his last two outings. In just over six and a half quarters of football in losses to the Bears and Buccaneers, Rattler took seven sacks, threw four interceptions and lost two fumbles. Unlike the undersized Rattler, Shough (6-foot-5, 219 pounds) offers an ideal frame as a pocket passer and solid arm strength to match it, but his lack of mobility and poor accuracy could render him a less interesting fantasy option.
